I was one of the selected artist for the SaveArtSpace x Expression Against Oppression public art initiative in Portland, OR. This project, which launched in 2021, brought together a diverse group of creatives to reclaim space and amplify the voices of Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities in one of the whitest cities in America.Expression Against Oppression provided opportunities for artists from marginalized communities to connect, collaborate, and engage with themes of social justice. The initiative aimed to empower Black and POC creatives, highlighting the value of their art and its ability to inspire change while fostering a sense of community and resilience This collaboration was more than public art—it was a powerful statement. Each billboard installation told a story of struggle, history, celebration, and liberation, showcasing the transformative power of art. Curated by Salomée Souag, Bernadette Little, and Xiuhtezcatl, the selected works were not only creative expressions but also calls to action for justice and equality.
"Racism is a Visual Poison" is a graphic I originally designed in 2020 for my book My Black is the Color of the Sun. The book explores personal and societal harm caused by colorism, examining how skin complexion is weaponized through intentional mockery and hierarchical structures in today’s society.
During the week of September 6, 2021, the selected pieces—including mine—were installed across billboard spaces in Portland, OR, where they remained on view for at least a month. This project represented a collective effort to elevate underrepresented voices, demonstrating that art can be a profound force for change.
