My Black is the Color of the Sun

Created alongside the two-person show American Hex at Fuller Rosen Gallery, my publication My Black is the Color of the Sun dives into the complex intersections of race, identity, and beauty. This work examines the pervasive effects of racist stereotypes on Black identity, while celebrating Blackness in all its resilience and radiance. Through its pages, I engage in a candid exploration of colorism and its profound impacts, sparking conversation about how these biases shape lives and perceptions.

The book invites readers on a deeply personal journey, recounting moments from my early childhood and teenage years. Through intimate anecdotes, I share the struggle of learning to embrace my appearance in the face of Eurocentric beauty standards and societal norms. The fragmented memories I present are raw and personal, yet they weave together a broader narrative about how internalized racism infiltrates nearly every facet of American culture. This publication stands as both a personal reflection and a call to confront and dismantle these harmful narratives.

In addition to being sold at Fuller Rosen Gallery - the publication was also sold at Printed Matter in New York, NY.
