Watermillion Matrix explores the complex symbolism of watermelons in Black culture, unpacking their ties to stereotypes, their role in helping formerly enslaved individuals build capital, and their broader connection to themes of Black liberation. The publication features a dynamic mix of academic essays, culinary watermelon recipes, and powerful poetry and vignettes, with contributions from Akasha Lawrence Spence, Dom Appetite, and Ruby Joy White.
This collection celebrates the cultural and historical significance of the watermelon, emphasizing its enduring impact on Black identity, history, and community resilience. Each copy includes watermelon seeds sourced through a collaboration with Black Futures Farm—one of Portland’s few Black-owned farms—highlighting the essential role of Black farmers and agriculture in our shared heritage and future.
The packaging of the book was designed to mimic fruit packaging in supermarket. The book was printed at Brown Printing in Portland,OR and the Seed Packets were printed by Risograph at Noon Studios also in Portland, OR
